Everyone experiences it sometimes, you are in a clothing shop and are about to buy a dress you just fell in love with. Somewhere in the back of your mind you hear a voice wondering if this is what you want, but whatever, you have no clue under what circumstances the clothing was made, so you ignore the voice and buy from another non-reliable product. This is of course very human and we really don’t ask you to blame yourself about it. Yet there are some simple checks that could help you find out if you are buying a good choice.
#Check 1: Am I going to wear this more than 60 times?
Did you know that a piece of clothing is only worn 7 or 8 times on average before it is thrown out? This is not very sustainable. The first step to a sustainable purchase is, therefore, to ensure that you are going to wear the garment a lot. So before making the purchase, ask yourself: Am I going to wear this more than 60 times? If the answer is no then it’s better to leave it on the clothing rack.
#Check 2: Do you know about the brand of the clothing?
For many brands, it is public knowledge of how reliable they are. We know that it’s better to stay away from the Primark, but did you know that a more expensive brand like Marks and Spencer does better in terms of durability? The brands may not tell this from the rooftops themselves, but it is usually publicly known in their annual reports, or through organisational research about the production practises of these brands. Researching this all by yourself while you are in the store might be a bit to much work, that’s why online shopping could be useful. You could Google in the brand name and you get a summary of how well the brand scores in terms of durability and ethical production. You can also ask the online store if they can tell you anything about the production of the clothing. This also ensures that the stores are well informed that there is a demand for ethical clothing.
Check 3: What you can find on price tag and label?
Can’t get anything about the brand or review? Then you can take a closer look at the price tag for the piece of clothing on the online store Major brands often like to let you know that they are durable and comfortable. So they will say something about this on the price tag. You can also see about the material of the clothing which should be provided in a good online store. Is it a reliable material which you were looking for? Where was it purchased? From just the above information, a lot can be deduced about the sustainability and the working conditions under which the item was made.
Check 4: Did you or your friend buy already from the online store?
Unfortunately, after going through this checklist you will often come to the conclusion that the item you wanted to buy was not really reliable. Not surprising, because it’s also possible that the piece of clothing you wanted to buy are important for you but you can’t trust any new online store . In this case, you can try to buy any small product from the store which will give you an idea about the new company.
